Dr. Tamara Powell is Director of Distance Education for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She was raised in Rison, Arkansas. She received her B.A. in English literature in 1992 from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas; her M.A. in English literature in 1994 from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville; and her Ph.D. in English (focusing on contemporary multiethnic American narratives) in 1999 from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. In 2001 she received a Graduate Certificate in Developing and Delivering Distance Education from the Louisiana Consortium for the Advancement of Distance Education (LaCADE), Louisiana Board of Regents, Baton Rouge, LA

Tammy taught at Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio and the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio before joining the English faculty in 1997 at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. In 2000 she became the Electronic Learning Coordinator of the English Department and received the Charlyne Smith Wyche Endowed Professorship. In 2004 she wrote the grant that established the fourth electronic graduate certificate program in technical writing in the nation, and she became coordinator of that program. In 2006 she was promoted to associate professor of English. In 2008 she joined the Instructional Design Team of Louisiana Tech’s Global Campus Department, where she assisted faculty throughout the university in developing, designing, and implementing electronic courses. Throughout her work with electronic learning she has written and worked on more than one million dollars in grants; delivered over 100 hours of group training and countless hours of one-on-one training; and created innumerable web and training resources for faculty and students, including Louisiana Tech's Online Writing Lab (OWL). Tammy joined Kennesaw State University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2009. Research interests include instructional technology and ethnic American literature. Recent and upcoming publications include "Lost in Translation: Applications of Simplified English in Academia" in IEEE; “Teaching Technology to Digital Immigrants” in Online Education and Adult Learning: New Frontiers for Teaching Practices; Queer Exoticism: Searching Outside for Inner Truth (editor); "The Awakening" in The Explicator; "Dude Writes Like a Lady: A Lesbian Hiccup in The Glass Menagerie" in POMPA 2008; and "Lord of Allusions: Reading Percival Everett's Erasure Through African American Literary History" in Valley Voices: A Literary Review.
