At the ADA panel hosted by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, accessibility information and statistics were presented to CHSS faculty and staff. One in five individuals at Kennesaw State University report having a disability, so discussing accessibility services is crucial for the CHSS community. Additionally, individuals with disabilities report higher likelihoods of leaving Kennesaw State according to the KSU Climate Survey. The KSU Climate Survey indicates that while there is an overall positive perception of the climate that KSU provides students and faculty, there are areas for improvement including accessibility and concerns related to disability requests and accommodations.
In looking at how to improve in these two areas from the Climate Survey, the ADA panelists acknowledged that first students, faculty and staff must first self-disclose their disability. Accommodations are not one size fits all. Once a disability has been disclosed, an accommodation plan will be developed that is specifically tailored to the individual’s needs. Without disclosure, the conversation about accommodations cannot begin.
