Welcome to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Kennesaw State University. Located in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area, students at Kennesaw State profit from the many cultural, recreational, corporate, organizational and athletic resources in easy reach of the campus. Like the University as a whole, our college is growing very rapidly in size, quality and reputation around the state, the nation and the world. You will study in state of the art, fully wired and wireless classrooms and labs in our newly opened environmentally friendly Social Science Building, our English building and other facilities around our beautiful campus. I recently joined the KSU community because of the unique approach to educational excellence it provides.
I take great pride in the many different ways in which students and faculty have distinguished themselves over the past few years. In the past year alone, faculty in the College of HSS won top national and regional awards for their teaching and scholarship. Our faculty and students are forging ahead with interdisciplinary programs in American Studies, Environmental Policy, Gender and Women's Studies, Peace Studies, Public History, Conflict Management, International Affairs, African and African Diaspora Studies and many more areas. We are now making joint appointments that insure that students will have the opportunity to address critical issues in a format that allows them to integrate their learning from across the disciplines, making them more marketable and better oriented to real world problem solving.
Here at KSU, our number one priority is undergraduate education. Every faculty member in the College of HSS is charged with and committed to excellence in teaching. This "students first" orientation benefits all who come to Kennesaw State for higher education. Our scholar-teachers produce new knowledge that adds state-of-the-art perspectives to their classes. Internships, study abroad opportunities (available in over 50 countries), and commitment to diversity in and outside of the classroom will prepare you for the challenges of the global community in which we, for better or worse, live and do business.
Often parents and students ask what they can do with a degree in the humanities or social sciences. Will there be a job waiting for you? If you look at the CEOs of the nations fortune 500 companies you will find that many of them have undergraduate degrees in the liberal arts. The same is true of leaders in education, health, government, law and the non-profit sector. Employers tell me they are looking for recent graduates who write well, can make a presentation, can work effectively in teams and can analyze complex problems in a global context. A major in virtually any of the disciplines in the social sciences and humanities at KSU provides the skills and experiences employers are looking for.
Again, I want to welcome you to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. I encourage you to explore the many opportunities available in the college. KSU is a great environment for personal growth. I hope you will consider joining our learning centered community.
